Remembrance of 1945

For Bob and Dorothy Kidd,
Written for the WAAF Association Service of Commemoration, 1995
Tune: Blaenwern

                                Come now friends here met in worship,
                                Raise a song of thanks and praise.
                                Thanks for mem’ry, thanks for friendship,
                                Thanks for life and length of days.
                                First we met in war and darkness;
                                Little choice but join the fight.
                                Now for years of hope and freedom,
                                Praise the Lord of peace and light.

                                In those days of warring madness –
                                Toil and sacrifice and care –
                                Yet we found a youthful gladness
                                In the life we had to share.
                                Working for a common purpose,
                                Knowing what we had to do,
                                Joined in life and tears and laughter,
                                What a comradeship we knew.

                                Many years of growth and living
                                Separate us from the war.
                                Aging also brings forgiving;
                                Time can heal the deepest sore.
                                If our children face a future
                                Built on justice, free from fear,
                                Praise the God who called to service
                                Those of us now gathered here.
